Pope Francis has been discharged from a hospital in Rome where he was treated for bronchitis. The 86-year-old pontiff was admitted on Wednesday after experiencing breathing difficulties following his weekly public audience in St. Peter’s Square. Francis received intravenous antibiotics during his stay, and the Vatican has now released details of his Holy Week schedule, which includes presiding over Palm Sunday and Easter Masses. Despite his recent health concerns, he is scheduled to celebrate Holy Thursday Mass at a juvenile prison in Rome, although it remains unclear if he will attend the Way of the Cross procession to mark Good Friday. Before leaving the hospital, Francis comforted a couple whose daughter had died, and joked with well-wishers as he signed a boy’s autographed cast. Despite feeling unwell during his stay, Francis quipped to reporters upon leaving that he was “still alive.” As a young man in Argentina, he had part of a lung removed, making him particularly vulnerable to respiratory illness.
