According to Canadian treasury data, nearly all federal government executives, or 98 percent, received bonuses totaling almost $200 million last year, bringing the total to over half-a-billion during the pandemic years, as reported by the Canadian Taxpayers Federation (CFT). CFT’s federal director, Franco Terrazzano, criticized the government for rewarding bureaucrats who failed to meet even half of their performance targets, while Canadians struggled to make ends meet. While the Treasury Board argued that these bonuses are necessary to remain competitive with private corporations, CFT highlighted the Crown corporations that provided bonuses and pay raises to their executives even as their profits slumped. For example, the Business Development Bank of Canada and VIA Rail gave out millions in bonuses and raises despite reporting losses.
