According to a China expert, Taiwan’s democratic system would be the most desirable model for a post-communist China. Wu Jianmin, a commentator and former student leader who was imprisoned in China in the 1990s, believes that after 30 years of democracy, Taiwan’s system is quite mature and among the best in the world. He suggested that a post-communist China could benefit from emulating Taiwan’s democratic system, proving that the Chinese people are capable of practicing democracy successfully.
Wu Jianmin, a “red second generation” himself, also mentioned that Taiwan’s development as a democratic society has demonstrated the success of a system that the Taiwanese did not fully understand initially. He emphasized that Taiwan’s readiness for democratic governance provides a feasible template for a country with similar cultural and ancestral ties as mainland China. Moreover, he highlighted the potential for a power struggle in China following the potential deterioration of the health of current leader Xi Jinping, and the lack of a clear successor, indicating that the regime’s collapse could be possible if the people decided to revolt.
