An earthquake measuring 4.9 on the Richter scale hit southern Haiti early on Tuesday, resulting in the death of three people and injuries to several others, according to officials. The quake struck near the city of Jeremie, at a depth of six miles, and caused widespread panic, with crowds gathering around buildings destroyed in the quake in the hope of finding survivors. Homes collapsed and several children were injured. The earthquake comes as Haiti continues to recover from devastating floods that killed at least 51 people over the weekend. Prime Minister Ariel Henry has requested international aid.
