Torrential rains on September 5 caused flash flooding in Greece, Turkey, and Bulgaria, resulting in at least seven deaths and numerous missing individuals. In Turkey, flash flooding in Istanbul’s Arnavutköy, BaÅŸakÅŸehir, and Küçükçekmece districts left streets submerged and caused two fatalities. Footage shared online showed residents stranded on top of their vehicles as the streets turned into lakes. Additionally, 12 people sustained injuries, and 1,754 houses and workplaces were affected by the heavy rain. In Greece, one person died and five others were missing due to the flash flooding. The central town of Volos, the mountain region of Pilion, and the resort island of Skiathos experienced record-breaking rainfall within a few hours. A Pilion region village recorded 75.4 centimeters (nearly 30 inches) of rain, the highest level in years. Greece’s fire service reported one fatality and the search continues for a missing individual who tried to save his son from floodwaters. In Bulgaria, the coastal town of Tsarevo was hit with a historic amount of rainfall, causing two deaths and the evacuation of residents. Flash flooding also occurred in Spain, causing three deaths and leaving three individuals missing. The sudden downpours turned streets into rivers of mud and affected regions including Madrid, Castile-La Mancha, Catalonia, and Valencia.
