The recent mass shootings in Belgrade, Serbia, have shocked the world, and it’s important to understand the reasons behind them. One of the co-authors of this commentary has a Serbian perspective and details the first shooting, which occurred at an elite elementary school where bullying behavior was common, and the child responsible for the shooting was regularly bullied. Incompetence in managing the school system is evident, and there is a general feeling that the education system has failed. The second shooting occurred a day later, and the president of Serbia addressed the nation to announce measures to combat youth delinquency, including lowering the age of criminal responsibility from 14 to 12 years. However, many believe that these incidents were waiting to happen due to a divided society, with the ruling party and those around them living well while many struggle. The media’s sensational reporting and lack of investigative reporting also contribute to the social tension in Serbia. People are outraged, and the government has not provided answers. The hope is that these shootings are an aberration and that Serbia does not become like the United States in terms of gun violence.
