A 17-year-old male was fatally stabbed on a public transit bus in Surrey, British Columbia. The incident occurred on April 11, just before 9:30 p.m. local time, near the King George SkyTrain station. The police homicide team reported that the victim died of his injuries after an altercation with another individual on the bus. The victim was identified as Ethan Bespflug in a crowdfunding campaign on GoFundMe, which raised over $10,000 to pay for his funeral and expenses. Authorities stated that the stabbing was a “targeted” and isolated incident and are searching for witnesses who may have witnessed the attack. In response to this incident and an earlier one on April 1, transit patrols have been increased at transit stations. There is no indication that the two stabbings are related. The police do not believe the incident is related to the Lower Mainland gang conflict. Surrey RCMP media spokesperson, Vanessa Munn stated that overall crime in Surrey is down by 14 percent. Transit authorities and police are being asked by B.C. Premier David Eby if more resources are needed to address public transit safety.
