The Royal Canadian Mint in Winnipeg is gearing up to showcase its new coins featuring the face of King Charles, set to be circulated across Canada. The model of the King will adorn one side of all Canadian coins and is also to be pressed onto a loonie, making it the first time the monarch’s effigy will appear on the coin.
According to the mint, a small amount of 2023-dated coins with the King will go into circulation in early December. Coin exchanges will take place at the mint’s Ottawa and Winnipeg boutiques later in the month.
The image of the King on the coins is the work of Canadian portrait artist Steven Rosati, who has previously designed coins for the mint, including the NHL goalie coin series. Back in May, the federal government instructed the mint and the Bank of Canada to replace the image of Queen Elizabeth II with one of King Charles III on the country’s coins and the $20 bill.
