A volcano has erupted on the Reykjanes peninsula in southwest Iceland near Reykjavik following significant earthquake activity in the area, according to the country’s Meteorological Office. The eruption is currently small and does not pose an immediate threat to people in the region. Reykjavik’s Keflavik airport has not been affected by the eruption. The lava’s emergence and the evolution of the eruption will be assessed by experts from the Meteorological Office. Images and livestreams from local news outlets show lava and smoke coming from a fissure on the side of the Fagradalsfjall mountain. The Reykjanes Peninsula is known for its volcanic and seismic activity. In 2021, there was a six-month eruption in the same area, attracting thousands of visitors. This eruption is not expected to emit significant ash into the atmosphere, unlike the 2010 Eyjafjallajökull volcano eruption.
