The events of Jan. 8 in Brazil’s capital city have left many unanswered questions, even after three months. Army general Gonçalves Dias, head of Brazil’s Institutional Security Bureau, resigned following the leak of CCTV footage showing his passive collaboration with the invaders who vandalized the presidential palace. The Brazilian government has labeled the alleged attacks as a coup, carried out with the complicity of government agents in service of the Lula administration. There is sufficient evidence to suggest that the Brazilian authorities did nothing to prevent the invasions. However, Lula has refused to allow a parliamentary committee to investigate the incident. The Brazilian Supreme Court’s investigation into the Jan. 8 events has resulted in questionable arrests and denials of rights. The Lula administration and its judiciary partners seem to be causing significant damage to Brazil’s democratic institutions.
