The Hamas-Israel conflict has brought attention to Qatar’s role as a state sponsor of terrorism and its support for Hamas. Qatar is one of the largest funders of Hamas and is upfront about its collaboration with the terrorist group. Qatar also promotes anti-Israel propaganda through media outlets like Al Jazeera and social media campaigns, spreading disinformation and whitewashing the acts of terrorism committed by Hamas.
While Qatar hosts Hamas leaders and terrorists, it is highly unlikely that Israel will invade Qatar unless there is a direct physical attack on Israeli territory. However, there is a possibility that other measures could be taken to apprehend Hamas leaders like Ismail Haniyeh, such as luring them out of the country for arrest or targeting them for assassination.
The United States should reevaluate its relationship with Qatar, considering its support for terrorism. Qatar’s designation as a major non-NATO ally was a mistake, and it should face stringent oversight and clear demands related to its role in the security sphere. If Qatar fails to meet these demands or violates them, the US can exercise leverage by demoting Qatar from its ally status and revoking political and economic privileges.
Unfortunately, it is unlikely that there will be a change in Washington’s posture towards Qatar, as the Biden administration sees Qatar as a partner in the region and believes it is playing a productive role. However, some experts believe that Qatar’s status as a major non-NATO ally will come to an end. The US has already imposed significant sanctions on Hamas, but it remains to be seen if further action will be taken to reduce support from Qatar and Turkey.
Overall, Qatar’s role in supporting terrorism and its relationship with Hamas should be a cause for concern, and the United States should reassess its ties with the nation. However, the current administration’s response suggests that there will be little to no change in the US-Qatar relationship.
