Federal public servants are accused of deliberately avoiding answering written questions posed by a Conservative MP, according to internal emails. Conservative MP Michelle Rempel Garner raised the issue in the House of Commons, stating that evidence obtained through an Access to Information request revealed that public servants withheld information she had sought from Natural Resources Minister Jonathan Wilkinson. The emails showed that public servants recommended using “limitation language” to answer questions from Conservative and NDP MPs. An official at Natural Resources Canada also stated that the response did not directly answer the questions but instead addressed the spirit of the questions. Rempel Garner accused the public servants of intentionally denying her an answer and claimed that their response violated her parliamentary privilege. House Speaker Anthony Rota ruled that ministers and their staff should provide accurate answers to written questions and expressed concern over the comments made by public servants in the internal emails. Other Conservative MPs also raised complaints about government departments avoiding their written questions. Assistant Deputy Speaker Alexandra Mendes acknowledged their concerns.
