The man who trains Terence Crawford, who is considered the world’s best pound-for-pound boxer, has been arrested at Manchester airport after a gun was found in his luggage. Brian “BoMac” McIntyre, 53, had been in England for several weeks training British boxer Chris Eubank junior. Eubank had hired Mr. McIntyre last month in an effort to avenge his previous defeat to Liam Smith in January.
Mr. McIntyre was charged with possession of a firearm by Greater Manchester Police after the gun was discovered in his luggage before boarding a flight back to the United States. He appeared in court on Monday and has been remanded in custody until his appearance at Manchester Crown Court on October 9. He has not yet entered a plea.
According to Greater Manchester Police, the firearm was found by airport staff in the hold luggage. The officers attended the scene and seized the firearm. They subsequently arrested Mr. McIntyre, a 53-year-old man from the United States, on charges of possession of a firearm and possession of ammunition for a firearm without a certificate.
The maximum sentence for possession of a firearm in the UK is ten years in custody. Despite Mr. McIntyre’s legal troubles, he guided Eubank to a successful victory over Smith at the Manchester Arena over the weekend. Crawford, whose previous win over Errol Spence was highly acclaimed, has been supported by Mr. McIntyre and is expected to win the Trainer of the Year award for boxing in 2023.
While awaiting the outcome of the British criminal justice system, Mr. McIntyre’s involvement in possible future bouts, such as a rematch between Crawford and Spence, remains uncertain. In the meantime, Eubank, the son of former champion Chris Eubank senior, may have to find a new trainer.
