Authorities in southeastern Saskatchewan are investigating a serious injury sustained by a police officer on the job. The incident occurred at the local police station in Estevan, located about 200 kilometers southeast of Regina. The officer was transported to Regina’s hospital via STARS air ambulance and is currently in stable condition. One person is in custody, and there is no danger to the public, according to the police.
The Saskatchewan Serious Incident Response Team announced on social media that they have been deployed to investigate the officer-involved shooting in Estevan. However, specific details regarding how the officer was injured have not been disclosed yet. The Estevan police stated that the Serious Incident Response Team has taken over the investigation and will release further information when available. Meanwhile, the RCMP will assist in the investigation of the officer’s injuries.
According to Police Chief Rich Lowen, a suspect was arrested after a serious incident near downtown Estevan at around 7 a.m. The suspect was then taken to the police station. However, during the processing of the suspect at around 9:30 a.m., an altercation broke out between the suspect and an officer, resulting in serious injuries for both of them. The medical condition of the suspect and the person injured near downtown have not been disclosed.
The Saskatchewan Association of Chiefs of Police expressed their wishes for the injured officer’s speedy recovery, and Premier Scott Moe also sent his well wishes. The incident serves as a reminder of the risks that protective services officers face daily to safeguard the community.
