The Pakistan Supreme Court has deemed the Election Commission’s decision to postpone voting for two key provincial assemblies unconstitutional. The elections in Punjab, the most populous province, and the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province were delayed due to inadequate funds and security support. The Supreme Court has directed the government to hold the elections in Punjab on May 14th and release PKR 20 billion ($70 million) to the ECP by April 10th for the polls. The court also urged the government to provide all necessary personnel, including the armed forces, for the smooth conduct of the elections. PTI leader Shah Mahmood Qureshi welcomed the verdict and called it a “watershed moment” in Pakistan’s political history.
