Federal Opposition Leader Peter Dutton criticized the proposal to entrench Indigenous interests in Australia’s Constitution through the Indigenous Voice to Parliament. He believes it will regress the country rather than progress it, taking Australia backward. A report by a parliamentary committee recommends the passage of the Constitutional Alteration Bill that authorizes holding a national referendum in Australia to decide whether The Voice should be embedded in the Constitution. However, Dutton attacked the parliamentary committee’s inquiry into the Bill, calling it a kangaroo court. He also warned that The Voice would grant new procedural rights only to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders, creating an Orwellian effect that would make some Australians more equal than others. In contrast, the Labor government’s Indigenous Minister Linda Burney rejected Dutton’s allegations and viewed The Voice as a means to deliver structural change and equal opportunities to Indigenous Australians. Meanwhile, some Indigenous leaders remain hesitant to support The Voice as they believe it will have no significant impact on the ground.
