Millions of households in Canada with low- or modest-income will be receiving a one-time grocery rebate from the federal government this week. The Grocery Rebate will be provided to 11 million eligible Canadians on July 5, either through direct deposit or a cheque from the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) along with the next quarterly GST/HST credit payment. The amount of the rebate will vary depending on each household’s income and family situation, with couples with two children potentially receiving up to $467 in extra funds, single Canadians without children receiving up to $234, and seniors receiving an average of $225. This benefit is a result of the Cost of Living Relief Act, No. 3, also known as Bill C-46, which was included in the federal government’s Budget 2023. Recipients of the rebate did not have to apply for it, as it is automatically calculated and delivered as an increase to the July GST/HST credit. It’s worth noting that eligibility for the Grocery Rebate may differ from eligibility for the July GST/HST credit, as they are determined based on different tax returns. Any outstanding balances owed to the CRA could also be deducted from the rebate amount. The CRA provides various examples of the rebate payment based on the composition of the household, and if individuals do not receive the rebate on the expected date, they are advised to wait 10 business days before contacting the Canada Revenue Agency for assistance.
