The situation in Israel and the Occupied Palestinian Territories is constantly changing, according to Foreign Minister Penny Wong. The Australian government recently announced plans to launch multiple flights to repatriate citizens from Israel, a day after the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade had suspended the flights. Minister Wong stated that the Australian government is considering the security environment and other factors in planning these flights from Tel Aviv. Additionally, efforts are being made to assist Australians wanting to leave the Occupied Palestinian Territories.
In response to the Hamas attack, the government had initially cancelled two evacuation flights. However, it is now committed to facilitating the return of Australians from Israel as quickly as possible. The government strongly advises against travel to Gaza and areas near the border. Prime Minister Anthony Albanese shared that Qantas has made its facilities available for flights from Ben Gurion Airport to London, as the government explores all options to bring Australians home.
Meanwhile, the Australian government has allocated an initial $10 million in humanitarian assistance for civilians affected by the conflict in Gaza. Of this amount, $7 million will be given to the International Committee of the Red Cross for urgent needs, and $3 million will be allocated to United Nations agencies for critical support in areas such as water, nutrition, sanitation, hygiene services, and child protection.
Foreign Minister Wong has been criticized for her call to exercise restraint and protect civilian lives. Addressing the criticism, she expressed that urging the protection of civilian lives is the right thing to do. Moreover, a United Nations expert, Francesca Albanese, has urged the international community to mediate a ceasefire between Israel and Hamas to prevent mass ethnic cleansing and protect the Palestinians. UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak has reaffirmed his support for Israel while expressing concerns for the safety of Palestinian people in Gaza. Additionally, U.S. Secretary Antony Blinken has emphasized the importance of protecting Palestinian civilians while recognizing Israel’s need to defend its people. Israel has issued warnings to evacuate Gaza City, as it prepares for a potential ground offensive and has cut off essential resources to the region.
