The Canadian payment processing firm Moneris confirmed on Saturday that credit and debit card transactions were interrupted by a network outage earlier in the day. The Toronto-based technology company issued a statement stating that there was no evidence to suggest that the outage was related to a cyber attack. Complaints about the outages started coming in before noon eastern time, but Moneris did not provide information on when the outage actually began.
Approximately three hours later, Moneris posted a message on social media site X, formerly known as Twitter, stating that they had resolved the network problem. The extent of the impact on businesses and transactions is still unclear, but complaints came from across the country, according to data provided by Downdetector.ca. In a statement to The Canadian Press, Moneris reported that the outage lasted for approximately 90 minutes.
The company emphasized that the issue was not related to a cyber attack and that transaction systems were functioning normally again. However, they noted that transaction processing could be slow as their systems catch up with the backlog. Moneris supports over 325,000 merchant locations across Canada.
