Recently, Mexico intercepted a shipping container from China that contained fentanyl, contradicting a statement made by a Chinese foreign ministry spokeswoman claiming that there was no illegal trafficking of the drug between the two countries. Mexican President Andrés Manuel López Obrador confirmed the seizure of the container, which had departed from eastern China and arrived in Mexico via South Korea. The drugs were contained in 600 packages of fuel resin weighing over 20 tons and tested positive for fentanyl and methamphetamines. This is not the first time that evidence of fentanyl smuggling from China to Mexico has been found, with most of it being trafficked by the Sinaloa and Jalisco cartels. In 2022, the United States Drug Enforcement Administration seized more than 10,000 pounds of fentanyl powder and captured 50.6 million fentanyl pills disguised as prescription drugs. Fentanyl is 50 times more potent than heroin and 100 times more potent than morphine, causing functional disorders quickly and leading to death.
