A man who killed five young people at a Calgary house party will not be released from a group home, according to a ruling from Alberta’s highest court. Matthew de Grood, who was diagnosed with schizophrenia, was found not criminally responsible for the stabbings in 2014. He requested a discharge to be closer to his family and reintegrate into society, but the Court of Appeal rejected his appeal. The court determined that de Grood still posed a risk of serious violent behavior and that his transition to unrestricted life would take time. His case will be reviewed annually by the Alberta Review Board. Despite making progress, his health remains fragile, and any disruption in his medication could have negative effects. Claims of bias and unfairness in the proceedings were dismissed by the court.
