Betr, a start-up sports wagering company backed by News Corp, was fined a record $210,000 by Liquor and Gaming New South Wales (L&G NSW) for breaching the state’s advertising laws during its launch in October. The company enticed gamblers with inflated odds on major events, including the Melbourne Cup, Cox Plate, AFL and NRL markets, via advertisements on various media platforms. L&G NSW issued 14 penalties to Betr, alleging they amounted to significant breaches of NSW law. The company denied any wrongdoing, but decided not to challenge the penalty and resolved the matter amicably. SportChamps, another betting firm, was also fined $40,000 by L&G NSW for illegal gambling advertisements on various social media platforms.
