An independent scientific adviser has recently resigned from a committee on pesticide management at Health Canada due to concerns regarding transparency and scientific oversight. Dr. Bruce Lanphear, a health sciences professor at Simon Fraser University, stepped down as the co-chair of the Health Canada scientific advisory committee on pest control products on June 27. In his resignation letter, which spanned three pages, he expressed little to no confidence that the committee could enhance transparency within the pesticide branch of Health Canada or ensure the safety of Canadians from toxic pesticides. The committee is responsible for providing independent scientific advice to Health Canada on the health and environmental hazards associated with pesticides, as well as conducting evaluations for new products and reviews. Throughout the letter, Lanphear highlighted the difficulties he faced in obtaining certain data and responses from Health Canada staff concerning controversial products and the department’s monitoring of exposure to toxic pesticides. He argued that the current regulatory system for pesticides at Health Canada is outdated, and called for a complete overhaul.
