The electoral tribunal in Guatemala City announced on Sunday that it had temporarily reversed a suspension order against President-elect Bernardo Arevalo’s Semilla party. This suspension had caused confusion about Arevalo’s victory in the days following the election. In a document, electoral officials stated that they nullified the suspension order until October. It remains unclear whether Semilla will face the suspension order again after that period.
Arevalo, who campaigned on a promise to tackle corruption, emerged as the winner of the second-round run-off election held on August 20th. However, shortly before the electoral tribunal officials declared him the victor, Semilla was notified of a suspension imposed by a branch of the tribunal due to registration flaws.
Mr. Arevalo has vowed to appeal what he views as an “illegal” suspension.
