The Ukrainian president is set to attend a summit in Hiroshima on Sunday. This year’s Group of Seven (G-7) summit is focusing on the war in Ukraine, with plans to introduce new sanctions against Russia in an effort to tighten the screws on the country. The G7 leaders plan to issue a declaration of unity, strength, and commitment to counter Russia’s aggression. The summit involves the leaders of the United States, Japan, Germany, the United Kingdom, France, Italy, and Canada, and will take place over three days. Economic pressure on Russia will increase, including restrictions on exports, inputs for war, and access to the international banking system. Additionally, sovereign assets of Russia will remain frozen until the war is over. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy is expected to attend the summit in person on Sunday. On the first day of the summit, leaders honored the victims of the atomic bombings in Hiroshima.
