Basketball player and Olympian Greg Francis has passed away at 48 years old, as confirmed by Canada Basketball. The cause of death was not disclosed. Francis represented Canada in both the 1998 FIBA men’s world championship and 2000 Sydney Olympic Games. Tributes were paid by former national team player and coach Leo Rautins and TSN Radio 690 Montreal NBA insider Peter Yannopoulos, among others. After playing NCAA basketball for Fairfield University, Francis played professionally for four years in Lebanon, Israel, and England before moving into coaching. He coached multiple teams, including the University of Alberta Golden Bears, University of Waterloo Warriors, and Ontario Tech University Ridgebacks, and was Manager of Men’s High Performance at Canada Basketball and Director of Sport Development for Ontario Basketball. He was also the first Head of Basketball for the CEBL. Francis impacted many players throughout his career and will be deeply missed.
