A tragic fishing accident in a small village in northeastern Quebec has left five people dead, including local man Keven Girard and two of his children. The group of eleven people were fishing for capelin when they were caught off guard by shifting tides, and all five victims were found unresponsive on the riverbank. Girard’s body was retrieved from the St. Lawrence river, while the identities of the children have not been released. The tight-knit community is devastated by the loss, with many expressing their condolences on social media. Capelin fishing is a popular activity in the region, with people using scoops to catch the silvery smelt fish. However, Mayor Jean-Maurice Tremblay emphasized the importance of watching for fluctuating tides, particularly at night. Quebec provincial police and Canadian Forces members assisted in the search, while Minister Kateri Champagne Jourdain has promised to provide psychosocial support to the community.
