A former champion cyclist, Gregor Braun, who achieved success at the 1976 Olympics by winning two gold medals, has been convicted by a German court in a child sexual abuse case. The regional court in Tuebingen found Braun guilty of sexually abusing a child, soliciting serious sexual abuse of a child, and soliciting the production of abuse imagery in multiple cases. The court sentenced him to 33 months’ imprisonment. The trial revealed that Braun had been paying a woman for years to bring her young daughter to engage in sexual activities, starting when the girl was only six years old. Prosecutors stated that the woman had at times coerced the girl to record explicit videos of herself or the two adults together, as well as taking pictures of the girl and sending them to Braun. The victim filed a complaint with the police in 2021, three years after running away from home, which brought the case to light. The court also ruled in favor of the victim, granting her compensation from the defendants. The mother, who confessed partially during the trial and apologized to her daughter, received a prison sentence of 45 months. Braun denied the allegations, claiming that he neither requested nor desired the presence of the girl. However, the court found the victim’s accounts credible and acknowledged the impact on her childhood. The verdicts can be appealed. Braun had an illustrious cycling career, winning gold medals at the 1976 Montreal Olympics in the individual pursuit and team pursuit events, as well as achieving numerous other victories in World Championships and road races before retiring in the late 1980s.
