One senior European official insists on the continued U.S. support for Ukraine to create a just and lasting peace in Europe and to halt Russian colonialism. Estonian Prime Minister Kaja Kallas warned that allowing Russia to succeed in any part of its attempted conquest of Ukraine would fracture European security in the long term and threaten liberty everywhere. During a defense summit hosted by Politico, Ms. Kallas emphasized the need for sustainable peace and urged American support to ensure European safety from continued Russian aggression. She stressed the necessity of crafting and implementing a peace strategy with U.S. leadership.
Ms. Kallas recently met with U.S. leaders in Congress to address concerns of some Republicans about funding Ukraine’s defense against Russian conquest. Following a “very good meeting” with congressional leaders, she expressed her desire to continue pursuing peace and understanding with those who are skeptical regarding support for Ukraine. Some House Republicans have attempted to block or limit the Biden administration’s efforts to provide security assistance to Ukraine, pointing to the need for clear communications with Congress on the importance of supporting Ukraine.
Having been born under Soviet occupation, Ms. Kallas highlighted that understanding the significance of liberty is essential, particularly for those who have never experienced living without it. Estonia and the other Baltic States, Latvia and Lithuania, were forcibly annexed into the Soviet Union in 1940, underscoring the potential implications of losing freedom for Europeans yet again.
When asked about Ukraine’s counteroffensive against Russia, Ms. Kallas expressed belief in a potential victory, stating that they have liberated 50 percent of their conquered territories. However, she acknowledged that such a victory would take significant time, possibly many years. Her sentiments are echoed by remarks from Czech National Security Adviser Tomas Pojar, who emphasized the need for long-term international funding and support for Ukraine to prevent further Russian aggression in Europe.
Ms. Kallas emphasized the importance of continued support for Ukraine to maintain European stability and stop Russia’s last colonial war. She believes that American support is fundamental in ensuring peace and confronting Russia’s aggression.
