Rangers at the popular Australian tourist spot of K’gari are refusing to cull the dingoes despite a recent attack on a woman. The woman was jogging on a beach when she was attacked by a pack of wild dogs, resulting in injuries to her limbs and torso. The incident occurred at Orchid Beach, and witnesses who saw the attack rushed into the ocean to rescue the woman. Although there have been previous attacks in the past two months, including one on an eight-year-old boy and another where a dingo dragged a 10-year-old boy under water, the rangers are firmly against culling the dingo population on the island. They believe their responsibility is to manage the risk associated with the dingoes and educate visitors on how to avoid dangerous situations. The woman was chased into the ocean by at least three dingoes, one of which has been identified as high-risk and is being tracked with a collar. The rise in dingo attacks is attributed to visitors ignoring restrictions and feeding or interacting with the animals, causing them to become habituated and less wary of people. Therefore, rangers are reminding visitors to exercise caution and supervise children closely during their time on the island.
