The Met Office has issued new weather warnings for the UK while Cumbria Police urged people not to travel to the county. Over 2,500 people in Cumbria were without electricity on Sunday morning following Saturday’s heavy snowfall. The power cuts and weather warnings were likely to endure for the rest of Sunday. According to Electricity North West, most areas would have the power restored around 10 p.m. and access was difficult for technicians due to heavy snow.
The Cumbria Fire & Rescue Service has been working tirelessly to help those trapped by the snow, urging people once again not to travel unless necessary. Cumbria Police also advised against traveling to the county and reported incidents of their highway teams being verbally abused. Several local venues were opened to shelter residents affected by the snowfall. Windermere Cruises suspended all its sailings for the day on Lake Windermere due to weather conditions.
The Met Office had issued an amber warning for snow in Cumbria on Saturday, as well as warnings for ice. There are similar warnings for snow and ice across other regions such as Scotland, the West Midlands, and Eastern England. This weather has caused airports such as Glasgow and London Stansted to suspend all their flights temporarily.
The UK Health Security Agency and the Met Office have also issued amber cold health alerts in five regions, and it is expected that the cold weather will continue to impact day-to-day life for an extended period of time.
