Former RCMP intelligence official Cameron Jay Ortis faces an upcoming hearing on January 11 where the presiding judge will hear arguments about his punishment. Ortis was found guilty by jurors in November of violating the Security of Information Act, attempting to violate the act, breach of trust, and fraudulent use of a computer.
The ongoing legal proceedings will help Ontario Superior Court Justice Robert Maranger reach a decision on Ortis’s sentence. The prosecution is seeking a prison sentence of 20 years or more, while Ortis’s defense argues that he has already served sufficient time in prison.
Following the jury’s verdict, prosecutor Judy Kliewer suggested the Crown would seek a prison sentence in the range of 20 or more years. Mark Ertel, a lawyer for Mr. Ortis, said the defence would argue their client had already served enough time behind bars as the proceedings played out.
