The Dutch government has collapsed due to its failure to reach an agreement on immigration restrictions, resulting in new elections in the fall. Prime Minister Mark Rutte’s conservative VVD party aimed to limit the influx of illegal immigrants to the Netherlands, but two of his coalition partners opposed this measure. Consequently, Rutte announced the resignation of the entire cabinet in a televised news conference. The impasse arose when Rutte demanded support for a proposal that would restrict the entry of children of war refugees already in the Netherlands and delay family reunification by at least two years. The proposal was deemed excessive by the Christian Union and liberal D66, leading to a stalemate. The current coalition will continue as a caretaker government until a new administration is formed after the upcoming elections, which are expected to take place in mid-November. Despite being a caretaker government, Rutte assured that it would not impact the country’s support for Ukraine. The Netherlands already has strict immigration policies, but Rutte had been seeking ways to further reduce the inflow of illegal immigrants. Last year, asylum applications in the country rose by a third to over 46,000, and this year’s projection exceeds that number, potentially surpassing the previous record set in 2015. These figures strain the country’s asylum facilities, leading to unsanitary conditions and limited access to basic necessities for refugees. Rutte expressed shame regarding the situation and pledged to improve conditions by reducing the number of illegal immigrants entering the Netherlands. However, his coalition partners disagreed with the extent of these policies. Rutte, the longest-serving government leader in Dutch history, is expected to lead his VVD party in the upcoming elections. This is his fourth consecutive administration since assuming office in October 2010.
