Climate advisers have recommended to the UK government that it should halt road-building projects due to concerns that net zero targets are not being met. The Climate Change Committee (CCC) has criticized the government’s 2030 emissions reduction goals in its annual update. The CCC, which advises the government on meeting its legally binding commitments to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, highlighted industry, transport, buildings, and fuel supply as areas of concern. The committee suggested that the government should review current and future road-building projects to ensure they align with environmental goals and do not contribute to unsustainable traffic growth. The report mentioned Wales as an example, where all major road-building plans have been canceled unless they meet strict net zero criteria. The CCC also emphasized the importance of shifting to low-carbon modes of travel, such as public transport, walking, and cycling. Despite the UK’s plan to ban new petrol and diesel cars by 2030, the CCC stated that there has been little progress in reducing car demand and improving public transport. The committee warned that urgent climate action is necessary to prevent devastating climate impacts, and Lord Deben, the chair of the CCC, stressed the responsibility of the current generation to address climate change.
