The City of Calgary has charged Fueling Minds Inc., a catering company and school lunch delivery service provider, for operating without a proper license. The company had been providing third-party food services to five Calgary child-care centers without authorization. The corporation and its two directors have each been charged a total of 12 charges under the municipal business licensing bylaw. They could potentially face a fine of up to $120,000.
According to Michael Briegel, the deputy chief of business safety, it is crucial for businesses in Calgary to have the proper licenses to ensure a safe environment for Calgarians and employees. Non-compliant businesses may put people at risk, and the city takes this matter seriously.
The E. coli outbreak has resulted in numerous hospitalizations and illnesses among children. Investigators have determined that the source of the outbreak likely originated from the central kitchen used by the 11 daycares involved. The province’s chief medical officer of health stated that the odds were “extremely high” that a specific meal served on August 29, which included meat loaf and vegan meat loaf, was the cause. Unfortunately, these items could not be tested as they were either consumed or discarded before the outbreak was identified. Dr. Mark Joffe announced that there would be a third-party external review to ensure no crucial evidence was missed during the investigation.
