Activists advocating for global rights have urged for the prosecution of former Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari, blaming him for his alleged involvement in allowing religious massacres during his eight-year leadership. While Buhari stepped down from his position on May 29, activists claim that he should be prosecuted for war crimes due to his alleged complicity in the face of widespread religious massacres in Africa’s most populated nation. The activists have claimed that Buhari, a Muslim, did not fulfill his promises of not governing in favor of Islamic supremacy and defending the Christians from persecution, leading to increased violence and no government intervention. These accusations come amid the recent massacre at the Christian college in Kaduna, kidnapping of Yobe school girls, and the continued captivity of Leah Sharibu, murder of Sokoto Christian student Deborah Emmanuel, and the relocation of ISIS to Nigeria. These events are believed to be attributable to Buhari and his support of Islamic supremacy. Activists have also accused US President Joe Biden of turning a blind eye to genocidal massacres under Buhari, resulting in absolute silence regarding the Nigerian government’s genocidal behavior and enslaving of Christians. Since 2015, Nigeria has become a haven for terrorists and Islamic jihadists, all under Buhari’s leadership from the presidential palace. In the first quarter of 2023 alone, Islamic extremists killed over 1,080 Christians, while at least 5,100 were killed last year. The Fulani, a large ethnic group in West Africa, has been accused of carrying out thousands of genocidal massacres and village takeovers in Nigeria.
