Suella Braverman, the Home Secretary, has advocated for further measures to reduce legal migration, claiming that there is “no good reason” why Britain cannot train its own workforce of lorry drivers and fruit pickers, thus decreasing the overall need for immigrant labor. In a keynote speech at the London-based National Conservatism conference on Monday, Braverman stressed the importance of controlling legal migration, stating that while illegal migration is important, both types must be managed. Despite the Conservative party’s promises to control immigration during the 2019 general election, Office of National Statistics figures show that net migration has been on the rise since the beginning of 2021. Braverman emphasized her support for building a high-skilled, high-wage economy through training the necessary workers and reducing reliance on low-skilled foreign labor.
