US President Joe Biden and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy met on the sidelines of the G-7 summit in Hiroshima, where Biden announced a new military aid package of up to $375 million for Ukraine. This marks the 38th drawdown of U.S. arms and equipment for Ukraine since Russia invaded Kyiv in February 2022. The aid package includes additional ammunition for High Mobility Artillery Rocket Systems, artillery ammunition, anti-tank weapons, and armored medical treatment vehicles, among others. Zelenskyy denied reports that Russia had captured the battlefield city of Bakhmut, thanking the “defenders” of the city for their great job, while Biden told his G-7 counterparts that the US will support a joint effort to train Ukrainian pilots on fourth-generation fighter aircraft and the US will permit its Western allies to supply Ukraine with fighter jets, including U.S.-made F-16s. G-7 nations also unveiled new sanctions against Russia and discussed China’s potential plan to seize Taiwan by force.
