A Chinese-Australian dissident cartoonist is seeking support from the Australian government after the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) attempted to shut down his art exhibit in Poland. The exhibit, titled “Tell China’s Story Well,” features works by Badiucao and addresses various sensitive issues such as the Tiananmen Square massacre, human rights abuses in Xinjiang and Hong Kong, territorial disputes in the South China Sea and Taiwan Strait, and Xi Jinping’s support for Putin’s invasion of Ukraine. The Chinese Embassy in Warsaw expressed outrage at the content of the exhibit and called for its cancellation. The CCP’s intervention has sparked a strong reaction in Poland, with the organisers of the exhibit criticizing the embassy’s actions and calling for support from those committed to free speech and expression. Badiucao, who has faced previous censorship attempts by the CCP, mentioned the difficulties of hosting similar exhibits in Australia due to self-censorship in the arts community. He met with Australia’s ambassador to Poland to discuss his concerns and receive support from the Australian government.
