Canada’s top ultra-triathlete, Shanda Hill, has achieved a remarkable feat by setting a new world record. The 41-year-old is now the only person to have completed three double-Deca races. She secured this unofficial title after completing the double-Deca triathlon in San Felipe, Mexico, covering over 4,500 kilometers in just 26 days. Throughout the race, Hill swam 76 kilometers, cycled 3,600 kilometers, and ran 844 kilometers, surpassing German Ronny Roesler to claim first place.
This victory in Mexico comes just a month after Hill finished the Deca ultra-triathlon in Buchs, Switzerland. In total, she has now raced over 9,000 kilometers since September. A double-Deca triathlon is equivalent to 20 Ironman races, meaning that Hill has completed the equivalent of 40 Ironman races in just two months.
Despite her considerable achievements, Hill emphasizes that winning is not her primary focus. Rather, she is dedicated to pushing her limits and seeing what she is capable of. Hill states, “What I set out to do was to finish these efficiently and well, and take care of my body throughout it. And then just do my best.”
Hill’s extraordinary accomplishments have earned her a place in the International Ultra Triathlon Association’s Hall of Fame. She is recognized for completing the equivalent of 100 long-distance triathlon races in only seven years. Additionally, Hill holds the Female World Record for the most long-distance triathlons completed in a year.
However, Hill’s journey in the world of triathlons began after overcoming a serious injury. In 2003, she was involved in a bike accident that required years of recovery. Unable to fully return to BMX racing due to the injury’s lasting effects, Hill turned her attention to running in 2010. A few years later, a friend introduced her to triathlons, sparking her passion for the sport.
Hill’s friend played a significant role in her preparation for her first race, an Ironman. This race, which she completed successfully, motivated her to take on more challenging races. Over time, her journey led her to the Deca triathlon and eventually the double-Deca triathlon. Hill remains grateful for her body’s ability to endure these intense events and continues to set new goals.
Hill has developed her unique approach to training for competitions. Rather than solely focusing on training for specific events, she believes in developing mental and physical strength through various activities. On top of that, Hill adapts to each race’s demands by paying close attention to her body’s needs, ensuring regular nutrition and hydration.
A crucial factor contributing to Hill’s success is the support she receives from her partner, Jacs Spence. Spence provides an outside perspective, recognizing patterns and offering valuable advice to help Hill perform at her best. Their partnership has proven to be a game-changer for Hill, providing invaluable support throughout her races.
Looking ahead, Hill already has her sights set on upcoming Deca events in Brazil and Italy. Her advice to others is to embrace discomfort and challenge themselves. She encourages individuals to step out of their comfort zones, as it is through such experiences that they can truly grow and learn about their own character.
