Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese is currently in the U.S. for a state visit with President Joe Biden. During his visit, Prime Minister Albanese announced that the Australian government will provide an additional $20 million worth of military assistance to Ukraine. This funding will be used for defense equipment, including counter-drone systems, de-mining equipment, portable x-ray machines, and a 3D metal printer. The Australian government’s total support to Ukraine now amounts to about $910 million.
Prime Minister Albanese emphasized Australia’s commitment to supporting Ukraine in defending itself against Russia’s illegal invasion. He stated that this contribution will provide Ukraine with some of the best capabilities in the world, while also investing in Australia’s sovereign defense industry and technology sector.
The equipment for Ukraine will be developed by Australian defense industry companies, including DroneShield, Micro-X, Minelab, and SPEE3D. Additionally, a Royal Australian Air Force E-7A Wedgetail plane has been sent to Germany as part of international efforts to protect the gateway of humanitarian and military support for Ukraine.
Deputy Prime Minister Richard Miles expressed Australia’s solidarity with Ukraine and its determination to work with partners in supporting Ukraine’s sovereignty and territorial integrity. He highlighted the important role of Australian companies in assisting international efforts to end Russia’s illegal invasion.
During a speech at Blair House in Washington DC, Prime Minister Albanese emphasized the role of Australian innovation in equipping Ukraine with top-of-the-line capabilities. He announced the additional $20 million defense assistance as a testament to Australia’s commitment to a more secure world.
In related news, President Biden and First Lady Jill Biden invited Prime Minister Albanese and his partner Jodie Haydon to a private dinner at the White House. This dinner served as a prelude to a state dinner with 100 guests and live entertainment. The state visit will cover various topics, including the Middle East, clean energy, AUKUS, China, and innovation.
Following his visit to the U.S., Prime Minister Albanese is scheduled to visit China in November, where he will hold meetings with Chinese leader Xi Jinping and Chinese Premier Li Qiang.
