Australia and New Zealand Banking Group (ANZ), one of the largest banks in Australia, has decided to wind down cash transaction services at some of its branches to align with the changing preferences of customers. Withdrawals and deposit services will be discontinued from March 30, and only Smart ATMs and coin deposit machines will be available for cash deposit or withdrawal. An ANZ spokesperson noted that a handful of branches would no longer handle cash at a counter, but cash and cheque deposits and withdrawals could still be made using the ATMs and coin deposit machines, and staff would be available to assist customers who might be using these machines for the first time. Since over-the-counter transactions across its branches have decreased by 50% in the last four years, ANZ has decided to evolve its branch designs to fit customers’ banking needs better. The Reserve Bank of Australia (RBA) has indicated that card payments have started to take priority over cash transactions, with a decline in cash transactions since the mid-2000s.
