The state government of Victoria in Australia has decided to do away with its subsidy for zero-emission vehicles, which will result in people having to pay more for electric cars. The subsidy was meant to run until May 2024, but will end on June 30, 2022. Industry experts have said that the sudden removal of the subsidy will place an unfair burden on those in Victoria and could hinder the state’s efforts to lower transport pollution. The state’s government had set a target to have zero-emission vehicles account for 50% of all light vehicle sales in the region by 2030, and while it has already made progress towards this goal, the removal of the subsidy could impact electric vehicle sales in the state. Other Australian states, such as Queensland, New South Wales, South Australia, and Western Australia, still offer rebates for electric vehicles.
