Tom Graham, an Alberta storm chaser, recalls the most violent tornado he has ever witnessed, which occurred during his childhood in Edmonton in 1987. This tornado, known as the “Black Friday” tornado, was one of seven tornadoes that day and had devastating effects, killing dozens of people. This event sparked Graham’s interest in storms, and once he got his driver’s license, he began chasing them regularly. Recently, he had the opportunity to chase another F4 tornado in Didsbury on Canada Day. Graham, who works as a millwright and volunteers as a weather watcher for Environment Canada, uses his knowledge and passion for weather to observe and report on storms. During the Didsbury tornado, Graham witnessed extensive damage caused by the tornado, but fortunately, there were no human fatalities. He describes the tornado as the most violent he has ever witnessed and explains that humidity played a significant role in its development. Despite the risks involved in storm chasing, Graham takes precautions to ensure his safety, positioning himself below the storm and maintaining a safe distance. He believes that educating others about storms and being able to forecast and witness their effects is worth the risk.
