Alberta Premier Danielle Smith has initiated discussions with British Columbia in an effort to expand the global market for Canadian natural gas. At the LNG 2023 conference in Vancouver, Smith spoke about the importance of natural gas in helping countries in Asia achieve emission reduction goals. She expressed frustration with the lack of federal infrastructure for Alberta producers to meet global market demands. Smith highlighted the benefits of shipping LNG from Canada’s West Coast, such as shorter transit times compared to the US Gulf Coast. To promote LNG export projects on the West Coast, Smith and B.C. Premier David Eby are exploring leveraging Article 6 of the United Nations Paris Accord to gain carbon credits for reducing emissions abroad. Smith believes this strategy is crucial for global emissions reduction. The massive LNG Canada project in Kitimat, B.C., is currently the only export facility under construction in Canada. However, Eby expressed concerns about B.C.’s ability to provide the necessary electricity to transition the natural gas industry away from fossil fuels. Alberta is also exploring other corridors for gas transportation, such as Yukon-Alaska, Saskatchewan-Manitoba, and possible links to James Bay in Ontario.
