Rowan Atkinson, the actor and comedian famous for his portrayal of Mr. Bean, has urged drivers not to buy electric vehicles (EVs) since the environmental benefits are not worth their production cost. Atkinson, who has a degree and master’s in electrical engineering, argued that current EV technology is more harmful to the environment than it is worth due to the massive amounts of energy required to make the heavy lithium-ion batteries, which are estimated to last only around ten years. He also pointed out that greenhouse gas emissions during the EV production process are 70 percent higher than building a petrol car. Atkinson supports the development of newer technologies, like solid-state batteries, hydrogen fuel cells, and synthetic fuels. He also criticized the current three-year leasing model for car ownership and suggested driving old cars for as long as possible and driving less to reduce demand for new vehicles. Atkinson’s comments have sparked criticism from some experts who claimed that the actor cherry-picked key facts and had an apparent lack of recent energy expertise. Despite the push for zero-emissions cars, governments of developed countries are implementing bans on the sale of petrol and diesel vehicles.
