The ACT Greens backbencher Johnathan Davis, 31, has been stood down indefinitely following allegations of sexual misconduct with two teenage boys. ACT Greens leader Shane Rattenbury stated that Mr. Davis faces “extremely serious complaints” and an initial review of the situation has been initiated by a senior staff member. It has been alleged that Mr. Davis engaged in a relationship with a 17-year-old boy and had sexual relations with a 15-year-old boy. Currently, he serves as the party’s spokesperson for health, LGBT affairs, and education. As of November 10, Mr. Rattenbury announced that Mr. Davis will be stood down indefinitely, stating that the allegations have not shown evidence of illegal activity. The complaints have been brought to the attention of the police, with a referral on Mr. Davis’ case received by ACT police. However, the police have not officially confirmed whether or not they have spoken to him.
Following this news, the ACT Chief Minister Andrew Barr and acting Chief Minister Yvette Berry released a joint statement, characterizing the allegations against Mr. Davis as “very serious.” The statement also emphasised the expectation for a thorough investigation from law enforcement. The ACT Greens were urged to support those who have come forward with these allegations, and other community members who may be distressed by the news. Mr. Barr and Ms. Berry asserted that the best course of action for Mr. Davis would be to resign from his position in the legislative assembly, as the allegations against him are deeply concerning and impact his ability to effectively carry out his role. Mr. Davis has been elected to the ACT Legislative Assembly in 2020, representing the Tuggeranong electorate of Brindabella.
