Christie’s announced on Monday that the private jewelry collection of the late Austrian billionaire Heidi Horten, comprising 700 pieces, is expected to fetch over $150 million at auction and is the world’s largest and most valuable private jewelry collection to be sold. The collection, which was acquired by Horten between the early 1970s and her death last year, includes some of the most spectacular pieces such as the 90-carat “Briolette of India” diamond necklace by Harry Winston, “Sunrise Ruby” and diamond ring by Cartier that is worth up to an estimated $20 million, and over 100 Bulgari pieces. Christie’s expects to exceed the record sales made for Elizabeth Taylor’s collection in 2011 and the Maharajas & Mughal Magnificence auction in 2019, which are the only two jewelry collections to have achieved sales of more than $100 million. The estate proceeds of the auctions will go to the Heidi Horten Foundation, which supports charitable causes, including health care and child protection. However, before accepting the sale, Christie’s examined the business practices of Horten’s late first husband, German department store tycoon Helmut Horten, and his purchase of Jewish businesses during the Nazi era that were sold under duress. Christie’s stated it would make a “significant contribution” from its final proceeds to advance Holocaust research and education. The auction will be held in Geneva on Wednesday and Friday, with an online event to be held in November for the rest of the collection.
