An earthquake with a magnitude of 6.3 struck the main island of the Philippines on Thursday, causing the suspension of some railway operations in Manila. Fortunately, no casualties or significant damage were reported following the quake, which originated at a depth of 10 kilometers (6.21 miles) in the sea. The earthquake was felt in nearby provinces as well. The transport ministry had to halt the operations of the three elevated railway lines in Manila due to the seismic activity. The Civil defense spokesperson, Assistant Secretary Bernardo Rafaelito Alejandro, expressed relief that there were no major effects from the earthquake, but cautioned that they would continue monitoring the situation. As President Ferdinand Marcos Jr addressed the press at a hotel in Manila’s business district, the ceiling lights were observed shaking. The mayor of Calatagan, located just 5 kilometers from the epicenter, described the earthquake as dizzying and stated that the town’s engineering department was conducting assessments for any damages. Although the initial magnitude recorded by the seismology agency was 6.2, it was later revised to 6.3. The agency also anticipates further aftershocks and potential damage.
