On the border between Zambia and Congo, a boat carrying around 50 people sank in Lake Mwero earlier this week, resulting in the deaths of 14 passengers. The boat sank shortly after leaving Chinsamba island due to severe winds, and Zambian authorities were able to rescue an unknown number of survivors from the water. One additional passenger died of a heart attack brought on by the stress of the incident. All 14 bodies have since been recovered. Boat sinkings are unfortunately common in remote regions of Congo, often due to overloading and lack of swim training amongst passengers, and rescue efforts can be limited in these areas. In January, at least 145 passengers went missing during a similar incident in northwestern Congo.
